Chinese New Year is just around the corner. We will be sharing traditional kuih and cakes recipes with you. Here is one of the most popular Chinese New Year recipes: pineapple tarts or pineapple rolls, or known as nastar in Malay. Enjoy!

It is another 3 weeks before we usher in the year of the Tiger. The best time about Chinese New Year is the preparation and I will always have a line up of cookies and cakes. One of our family’s favorite and also my specialty is the hand-made Pineapple Tarts. Over the years, I have spent a lot of time and passion trying to make perfect this little jewel and today it has always been the most popular among my guests…(get pineapple tarts recipe after the jump)

Happy  New Year! Last week, my neighbors and I had a wonderful potluck party to usher in 2010 and one of the special traditional delicacies that I learned from a neighbor is her ever popular Chai Kueh. Her Chai Kueh has always been a hit at all our gatherings. I have always enjoyed the chewy texture of Chai Kueh and since it is steamed, it is a rather healthy snack to enjoy……(get Chai Kueh recipe after the jump)

I would like to thank my mother-in-law, a refined Nyonya cook for sharing this recipe with me. It is a very traditional way of making spiral curry puffs. As a traditional cook, her cooking is always based on estimation and last weekend, I have managed to get the recipe and the measurement down. The crispiness of the skin blended together with the spicy chicken curry and potatoes is just perfect for a relaxing afternoon tea…(get curry puff recipe after the jump)

Grilled cuttlefish is not really Nyonya Food, but it certainly was one of my favorite snacks or “junk” food growing up. My grandmother was a huge fan of cuttlefish; in her kitchen, there was always charcoal fire in the traditional clay burner so she could grill cuttlefish on demand. As her beloved and youngest grand daughter, I got to share her loot. (My other favorite childhood junk food is grilled satay jellyfish.)

If you have been to Asia, you might have run into mobile vendors who sell various kinds of street food, one of them is grilled cuttlefish over charcoal fire. In Penang, you can find grilled cuttlefish stalls in Gurney Drive and the night hawker center at Esplanade. In Thailand and Vietnam, where seafood is also an important part of local diets, you can find a lot of vendors selling grilled cuttlefish along the beach towns and markets.
